Huge thanks to the 2023 Michigan-Israel Partnership Grant Program for awarding us our third grant. We can’t wait to collaborate with the Vander Roest Cardiac Mechanobiology Lab and the UM Cryo-EM core facility on “Ultrastructural analysis of gene edited human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes to understand mechanisms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy”.

Leeya delivered an invited talk at the European Research Society (eMRS) Fall Meeting titled, “Micropatterning human induced pluripotent stem cell cardiomyocytes for cryo-electron tomography studies”. It was fantastic to hang out with the mechanobiology crew that was there and to see beautiful Warsaw, Poland.

The lab participated in the wonderful  Advances in 3D Bioprinting conference, organized by Prof. Shulamit Levenberg and Dr. Dina Safina from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering. We heard many fascinating talks about cutting edge developments in 3D bioprinting, and our Shani presented a poster about her PhD research!

Today we received big news. We were awarded two major grants from the Israel Science Foundation (personal and equipment) to elucidate the cytoskeletal architecture of endothelial cell-cell junctions as a function of extracellular matrix mechanics! We are officially in business (and so relieved!)…

Leeya gave a talk at the 66th International Conference on Electron, Ion, and Photon Beam Technology and Nanofabrication (EIPBN) in San Francisco, CA. She also had the honor of serving as a panelist on the Women in Nanofabrication (WIN) Early Career Panel Discussion at the annual WIN luncheon.

Leeya was honored to present her thoughts and experiences “Micropatterning cells for cryo-FIB and cryo-ET” at the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute Workshop on Frontiers for CryoET: Hardware Developments in Redwood City, CA. She enjoyed three days of inspiring talks and conversation about cryo-ET! You can find recordings of the talks here.

Leeya gave a talk titled “Microsystems for Studying Mechanobiology” to potential undergrads at the Technion Open Day. Hoping that together with our co-presenter, Prof. Omri Ram, we convinced the audience that the field of mechanical engineering encompasses a wide range of interesting topics! Come one, come all.

Leeya had a fabulous day at Ben-Gurion University meeting the local cryo-EM crew and catching up with friends from her graduate school days at Tel Aviv University. She delivered the departmental seminar at the  Department of Biology titled, “Micropatterning for Cryo-electron Tomography Studies of Cells”, and is looking forward to her next train ride down south to work with Dr. Ran Zalk at the Electron Microscopy Unit of IKI.

The Engel lab welcomes Anan-Benan Musa! Anan holds a B.Sc. from the faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering at the Technion, and he will work on developing a microfluidic system that enables high throughput single-cell analysis of neuronal cells in collaboration with Dr. Maya Maor-Nof (joining the Faculty of Biology in 2023).
